Commercial pilots Scott McLelland and Jay Richards were worried about the bumpy airline industry, so they
decided to get a little more grounded in their spare time. When the two golf fans came upon a magazine ad for
custom putting greens, they had their idea. Now their Crofton, Md., business, Chesapeake Greens, is putting high-quality turf into homes and backyards throughout our region. McLelland and Richards, who met at the Naval Academy, do most everything on these custom installations, from client consultations to sculpting the green's rises. They lay down an asphalt-like overlay that stays in place, unlike regular dirt, "like that Magic Shell stuff you put on ice cream," as Scott describes it. It's a maintenance-free putting surface that will withstand kids, storms, even winters. Most of the greens, which start out around $3,000, are built right off the backyard patio; their largest ran more than $20,000 - a 1,300-square-foot green with five separate holes. One diehard duffer turned his family room into a putting green so his kids could practice year-round. The best part of the job? Testing the green speed. 410-721-9858 or chesapeakegreens.com. - K.H.E
